Though I am looking and calling as much as I can, I don't believe I'll be able to find an apartment by the time I need to move in the next couple weeks. On the upside, I could probably find a short-term place close enough to where I need to be, as sort of a "base of operations" until I can actually find a real place, but it leaves me in a bit of limbo with regards to my mailing address. Bah!

My tentative plan is to call as many places as I can, see as many as I can this weekend, and while wandering around the neighborhoods, take down information for any "for rent" signs that I see, then call and possibly visit/apply the following week/weekend. That week in Mountain View is sort-of a killer. It does delay by a week when I *need* to move, but it also removes the opportunity to go to complexes, talk, etc.

I suppose worst-case scenario, I sleep in my van in the Google parking garage, and shower at the gym. At least I'll be fed, have internet access, and be safe (it's gated) ;).

mapskrieg.com is a mashup between google maps and craigslist apartment listings. just put in the area code of choice and it uses that as the center of a fair sized chunk of landscape.

it saved our asses last summer.

I had seen that site before, but I forgot about it. Thank you for reminding me. Now all they need to do is to do the same thing at westsiderentals.com (they already do individual properties on a map, but being able to adjust a slider with min/max rent, checking options in realtime, etc., would make my search so much easier).

You could get a PO box to establish a snail address in your new neighborhood.

An alternate worst-case scenario is to stay at a hotel until you find an apartment. Expensive, but in some sense a "cost of doing business."

Oh yeah, save all these receipts because expenses related to moving for a job are usually tax-deductible.

I won't be renting anything, so about the only moving expense I should be having is gas and time (to drive between South OC and the Santa Monica area).

Yeah, I've found some extended stay weekly-rate places. A real dump for $250/week that's a block off the beach, or a nice place 3 blocks from the new office at $350/week. Either one is fairly reasonable for an extended stay hotel in the LA area, and actually in the monthly rate of places I'm thinking about renting anyways.

Good point about the PO box, though I'm thinking maybe I'll just get my mail forwarded to my office until I get a place and update my mailing addresses everywhere.

Speaking of which, I just got a reply to one of my long-term ads from a woman who has a 700 sq. foot 1 bedroom place on the beach in Venice. It looks awesome. I've got her phone number, and she wants to rent it out ASAP. I'm going to call her when I leave work in like 10 minutes.

I wants it.
