Goodbye OC, hello LA
I was offered a position at Google today, and I accepted. I've put in my 2 week notice.

It's now a matter of getting and signing paperwork, listening to and refusing counter offers from my current employer, finding a place to live somewhere along the coast between Manhattan Beach and Redondo Beach, and all of the other nonsense related to changing jobs and moving.

If all goes as planned, I'll be starting on June 16.

I still would prefer to teach at a college or university, but paying off student loans is not a bad idea in the interim.

I don't know anything about your field. Josh and I have talked about this option, of seeking some other kind of employment in between PhD and assistant prof, but for our field this is sort of suicidal. Which is really too bad. I think it would be nice to take a year walkabout.

It's not always the best career decision, but one of the many things that need to be taught to the next generation are precisely those technologies that Google (and Networks in Motion) are pioneering. Add in the potential for research at Google, and at least for me, it's almost a no-brainer.

I don't quite know yet. Now that I've accepted their offer, there is discussion at Google about what team(s) would want me, followed by me picking from them.

Contratulations! People say that the work at Google is an unique opportunity in life. And you will be able to interact with smart co-workers as a guy called Guido, for example, but I don't know if he knows much about Python.;-)

I have no doubt that working for Google will be unique, but sadly, I probably won't be working directly with Guido. Different offices, different teams, ..., but it's all good.

Awesome! You have to let me and SuperQ know when you come to visit Mountain View.

I like the Santa Monica office, but I rarely can come up with excuses to visit (I've been there 3 times I think, but last time was about a year ago.)
