Maybe I'm missing something, but I couldn't find a link to make Picasa offer my shared photos easy to access by users without a gmail account. To bypass that, I've gone ahead and created a flickr account. Right now it only has my surf boards and a couple other pictures, but it will eventually become the home of those pictures that I want to make available to people.

You can go http://www.flickr.com/photos/chouyu_31/ to see them.

Your Picasaweb "Public Gallery" shouldn't require users to log in at all. Even if you make them private, there's a URL with an "authkey" that you can give to people (although it's only secure as long as the URL doesn't make it out elsewhere.)

I was able to go to my gallery without logging in:

Is that not what you meant?

I tried doing that, both with an 'authorized' url, as well as a public section, but neither seemed to work for me (I'd use both of them in a different browser on the same machine, and I'd get a username/password prompt).

In any case, the Picasa software is also a little too fully featured for me. All I need is a method of uploading pictures, with or with naming/describing/tagging, and that's it. Picasa wants to do everything for me and more, which is a little overwhelming, especially when I've got pictures I don't want to upload in a directory right next to pictures I do want to upload. Even though Flickr has a 100 meg limit upload/month for their free account, their simple upload tool wins in terms of simplicity.
