Extended I'm Blue rant for 10-12-2004
Originally posted on October 12, 2004, but backdated to not appear on my front page.

My heart goes out to Christopher Reeve's family. I'm sorry for their loss, and I know there is nothing that can be done about it, except perhaps to get others to donate some money to help fund stem cell research, which we hope will help those with such injuries and more.

I hate to make such things political, as they never should be, but in this time of public loss, maybe it makes us wake up to the losses that many others are suffering accross the world, that maybe we can stop. Take, for instance, America fighting this 'war' in Iraq. The reports have come in, and the sanctions that Bush Sr slapped on Saddam destroyed his capabilities to make any WMD. There was no imminent threat, and Bush Jr knew this before he invaded. The lies have been uncovered, and if we play our cards right, maybe we can save some lives. Couple this with the reduced polution controls that Bush has allowed to happen (all for the sake of his friends' businesses), and now we are talking about threats to our drinking water, air, and the sustainability of Earth's ecosystem. Finally, when you discover that Bush's economic policy has resulted in the first overall reduction in jobs within the United States since the great depression, I would hope the choice becomes clear.

Ahh, but what about the Bush vs. Kerry stance on issues? What, you mean there are more important things than human lives or the environment? It is getting late, and I'll update this tomorrow afternoon/evening with the different sides. If you would prefer to get a straight answer, just ask, and I'll answer.

some background informatio before reading my response: edheadnc is a Canadian citizen living in NC, dating a US marine for the past 4 years. she is also an interior designer working on sustainable energy (yay earth!)

bush is a nice guy. i don't agree with him, but i don't think he's a bad person. if he lived next door to me, i'd invite him to my BBQs, even if I knew he wouldn't come. that DOESN'T mean he's the right man for the job.

i don't want to say "my boyfriend has been to Iraq and it's all dubbya's fault" because it IS his job to go overseas. i DO think it's dubbya's fault that there's not a GOOD reason for him to be over there? want to take out a dictator? check out north korea, why don't you?!

I can't vote, as my citizenship hasn't gone through yet and the registration deadline has passed here. but every person I know will get a HUGE earfull if they don't vote.

ps, i like the fact that if everyone adoped bush's policy of attacking with a notion instead of proof or attack, the entire world woule be killing each other.

pps, on the environemtn, don't you LOVE that business can just PAY to further pollute the earth? i know I do!

Re: Bush being a nice guy

He may very well be a nice guy. I have heard that he is quite pleasant when one is speaking with him...as long as it is not about politics. However, I think his inability to admit that he was wrong about any decisions he has made in his administration, is an example of a serious character flaw. I understand not wanting to admit that one is wrong, perhaps the embarassment of it; hell, my job as a graduate student, TA, etc., is to not be wrong. But when I am wrong, I admit it, and apologize.

Re: Going overseas

I agree completely with you. There are those whose jobs it is to fight for what Americans believe in (I guess things like, freedom, justice, 'the American way'), so we shouldn't be angry for it happening. But invading Iraq when there was no threat from them, that they weren't funding terrorism, and being lied to about it, that pisses me off.

The worst thing is that people were all in a big huff about Clinton having 'sexual relations' with an intern and lying about it. But the fact that there hasn't been a revolution about us invading a country based on a lie from Bush Jr., or even a hearing, makes me very angry.

There seems to be two standards in America:
The Republican standard: Do whatever you want, you have the money to deal with anything, and your Republican brothers in the house and senate will make sure that you are never brought up on charges.
The Democrat standard: Anything you do that may be of questionable intent, will result in charges being brought, and you will not be elected again.

If I had one piece of advice for you it would be to tear up your US citizenship application, and convince your boyfriend to move with you back to Canada (when he gets back from overseas).
